How Jesse Owens Worked Out As A Senior…

senior fitnessJesse Owens… the name still congers up images of Greatness almost a century after his world beating accomplishments.

He was known as a sprint and long jump specialist… and Jesse competed for the United States of America in the 1936 Olympics. He won fame by winning 4 gold medals during that tumultuous time. You see, Jessie Owens is long considered one of the world’s greatest athletes.

But that’s not what I’m going to write about today…

What I want to talk about is Jesse Owens 40 years later. I recently read an article about Jessie and his workout regimen in Phoenix magazine.

Apparently, Jessie moved to my home town of Phoenix in 1972… he was 60 years old at the time. What caught my interest weren’t his accomplishments from long ago, but his workout regimen at the age of 60.

You’d think that as a former sprinter and long jumper, he would have done a ton of running. But that wasn’t the case at all…

You see, the magazine reports he did the following workout…

Now remember, this was at age 60…

He started with 6 minutes of Calisthenics, then cycled for 2 miles on a stationary bike. This was followed by 40 push ups…

Then forty pull ups.

Then he skipped rope for 5 minutes. Worked a punching bag for four minutes… rowed 100 strokes on a rowing machine… then finished with a steam, a sauna, and a massage…

That’s how he kept in tip-top shape throughout his golden years.

Sadly he died in 1980 from lung cancer… he was a pack- a-day smoker.

Jessie Owens was an amazing man… and still to this day, he probably would set the standard for most 60 year old workout regimens!

By the way… Jessie’s workout location of choice?

The local YMCA.
